Transformers: Age of Extinction
The fourth installment of the hit franchise Transformers, a series of science fiction action films based on the popular transformer toys created by Hasbro and Tomy. Directed by Michael Bay and executively produced by Steven Spielberg, Transformers: Age of Extinction features an entirely new cast of human characters, including Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz in the lead role. The film is a sequel to Transformers: Dark of the Moon with its story taking place four years after the invasion of Chicago in which a mechanic and his daughter discover a deactivated Optimus Prime. At the same time, a powerful businessman and a group of scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions as they push the boundaries of technology beyond their control.
For the first time in the franchise history, a significant portion of the film was shot in Chinese cities to attract movie goers in China which was the world's second-largest film market, with box-office revenues up by 30% in the first quarter of 2014 after rising 27.5 percent in 2013 to $3.6 billion. The film's June 21 2014 debut in the southern Chinese metropolis of Hong Kong ahead of its launch in New York the following week was the latest sign of Hollywood's increasing focus on China's booming film market.
On June 21, 2014, Pangu, a Beijing property developer and an investment partner in the film's China productions, terminated cooperation with the new "Transformers" movie, and demanded Paramount Pictures to make edits to it and asked China's film regulation authorities to suspend screenings of the blockbuster film. The company owns the Beijing Pangu Plaza, a dragon-shaped hotel, office and mall complex that stretches the length of half a dozen football fields and is featured in "Transformers: Age of Extinction."
