Novgorod
Leading city of Russia and flourishing commercial centre throughout the Middle Ages, it became a principal office of the Hanseatic league. At the peak of its power under Alexander Nevsky (r.1236-63), Novgorod was a bulwark against German and Swedish expansion. It was absorbed by Moscow in 1478.
