The United States Army Corps of Engineers is a federal agency with a mission to provide vital public engineering services in peace and war to strengthen the nation's security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters. It is also a major U.S. Army organization employing some 38,000 civilian and military personnel, making it one of the world's largest public engineering, design and construction management agencies. Much of the U.S. infrastructure was built on the proverbial back of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The Corps of Engineers are actively involved with such public works as dams, canals and flood protection in the United States, and provide 24% of U.S. hydropower capacity.
