Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A component in the VOR system on which the pilot selects the radial from the VOR station along which he wishes to fly. The omni bearing selector (OBS) shifts the phase of the reference signal inside the instrument, so the needle on the course deviation indicator (CDI) will center when the aircraft is on the selected radial.
Industry:Aviation
A component or substance used to hasten a chemical action or change.
Industry:Aviation
A component part of the transmission or power train of a helicopter which automatically disconnects the main rotor from the engine when the engine stops or slows below the equivalent RPM of the rotor.
Industry:Aviation
A component that holds a constant and steady suction, a pressure lower than that of the atmosphere, on a system. Some gyroscopic instruments used in an aircraft are operated by air pulled into the instrument case by a suction produced by an engine-driven vacuum pump. A suction relief valve in the line between the pump and the instrument case has a spring-loaded poppet that remains closed until the pressure becomes low enough to allow outside air pressure to force the poppet off its seat, then outside air is taken into the pump through the valve, rather than through the instrument case. This air entering the system holds the pressure inside the instrument case at the value for which the suction relief valve is set.
Industry:Aviation
A component that produces no gain in an electrical circuit. Resistors, capacitors, and inductors are passive components. Active components are such devices as transistors and electron tubes that do produce current or voltage gain.
Industry:Aviation
A component used to insert a controlled amount of resistance into an electrical circuit. Carbon resistors are made of a mixture of carbon and an insulating material formed into a small cylinder and baked. Its resistance is then measured and its value marked in the form of colored bands around one end.
Industry:Aviation
A component used to open or close an electrical circuit or to select paths through the circuit.
Industry:Aviation
A component used to place a specific amount of resistance in an electrical circuit.
Industry:Aviation
A component used to prevent fluid leaking between two surfaces. If there is relative movement between the surfaces, the seal is called a packing. If there is no movement between the surfaces, it is called a gasket.
Industry:Aviation
A component used to protect electrical circuits from surges of high voltage that could cause damage. A sensor monitors the voltage and, if it becomes excessive, the overvoltage protector opens the circuit to protect the components.
