A complex antenna which consists of a number of elements. A beam of energy is formed by the superimposition of the signals radiating from the elements. The direction of the beam can be changed by varying the relative phase of the signals applied to each of the elements.
Industry:Aviation
A complex electronic circuit made on a single chip of semi-conductor material. Passive components, such as resistors and capacitors, and active components such as transistors are formed by several layers of conducting and insulating materials. These components are connected together to form such complete circuits as gates and amplifiers.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a centrifugal-compressor gas turbine engine. The air adapter is located between the diffuser and the combustor and is used to direct the airflow into the combustor at the proper angle.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a finishing system that provides a good bond between the surface and the material used for the topcoats.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a fire detection system that signals the presence of a fire or overheat condition.
Beads of a thermistor material (a material, such as germanium, whose resistance changes with its temperature) support a wire that forms part of the fire detection circuit. The bead-supported wire is enclosed in a metal tube routed through the area to be protected.
If the tube is heated by a fire, the thermistor material changes from an insulator into a conductor and completes an electrical circuit between the central wire and the tube. This completed circuit initiates the fire-warning procedure by turning on the fire-warning light and sounding the fire-warning bell.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a flight management computer system that contains a cathode-ray tube and a keyboard with alphanumeric keys and mode-select and line-select keys. The CDU allows the flight crew to access the data to be displayed.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a gas turbine engine used to ignite the fuel-air mixture when the engine is being started. Some igniters resemble spark plugs used in reciprocating engines, while others are glow plugs heated yellow-hot with electrical current.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a high-pressure pneumatic system that removes most of the water vapor from the compressed air. When the compressed air is used, its pressure is dropped, and this pressure drop causes a drop in temperature. If any moisture were allowed to remain in the air, it would freeze and block the system.
The separation is normally done by centrifugal action of the air that slings the moisture out into an area where it can be collected and drained when the system is shut down.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator that slows the motion of the actuator piston. The snubber absorbs the shock when the actuator piston reaches the end of its travel.
Industry:Aviation
A component in a large aircraft electrical system used to reduce the AC voltage and change it into DC for charging the battery and operating DC equipment in the aircraft.
